Charlie Christie to Enter the Fray?

Is New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie about to jump into the pool for the Republican nomination? Well if he did he'd certainly cause a big splash... or tsunami? Hype surrounding the possibility of Christie throwing his hat into the ring is rising from the GOP grassroots like Yellowstone geysers.

Speculation emerged after a statesman like speech at the Ronald Reagan Library last Tuesday and since then big names - including 41st President George H.W. Bush, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and former First Lady Nancy Reagan - have all encouraged the 49 year-old to run. Things got even more excited last week when it was leaked the Gov. maybe reconsidering his position which so far, publicly at least, has been a steadfast 'no.' Now where have we heard that before?

Interestingly, the clamour for Christie's entrance into the race may be more of a reflection of the quality of the field rather than the Gov.'s merit. The pervading notion in the current atmosphere is one that Christie's entrance will kick-start the race and be something of a knight-in-shining-armour for the GOP to take-on Obama.

Right! We had all the same hype about Perry and once he entered nothing really changed. The next-in-line man, Mitt Romney, still sits at the top of the heap ready to break out the latest impression of Bob Dole. Christie has been in charge of The Garden State for two years and almost instantaneously spent his political capital tackling the $11 million state budget deficit but his reportedly heavy-handed tactics are not going to appeal to the centre.

The label 'hot air' has been synonymous in this race with first Bachmann, then Perry and now Christie; albeit 280 lbs of hot air.
