With blue-collar Michigan the next stop for each battle bus, candidates have been simultaneously preparing themselves for Super Tuesday which happens a week after they throw-down in Wolverine country.

Expect Santorum to lay down the gauntlet in Michigan, as he tries to identify himself as a fellow blue-collar worker from Pennsylvania, and for Arizona to fall in the Romney column given it's sizable Mormon population. There will be 59 delegates at stake between Arizona and Michigan whilst all states voting on Super Tuesday will allocate their delegates proportionately, meaning it's not necessarily about winning each state but doing as well as you can. Ahhhh, isn't that nice!
The Republican presidential nomination race came to Florida as a seemingly two-horse race. Has it now ensured that the race moves on with only one looking in good shape? In a rather one-sided affair, Willard Mitt Romney came away with an approximate 15 point victory over nearest challenger Newt Gingrich. I promise I'll stop constantly referring to him as Willard Mitt... Nobody else running cracked the 20 point mark in this crucial state's primary that operates a winner-take-all policy regarding delegates. One time frontrunner Rick Perry has withdrawn from the race to become the Republican party's presidential nominee. Joining him on the sidelines is Jon Huntsman who entered the race as something resembling the 'thinking man's' candidate with his libertarian leaning outlook. Perry fell off the horse that was going to take him to the finish line, Huntsman never really got into the saddle...
The clip above shows the moment Perry started to descend down the slippery slope of electoral failure as the seeds of doubt were sown in the minds of GOP diehards that this proponent of small government and curbed public spending couldn't even name all the federal departments he'd slash and burn. "As long as I'm seein' flames, I don't give a hoot what burns!"

Even after a rather disappointing third place in the New Hampshire primary, Huntsman had insisted he'd continue but this newslog believes his decision to stand aside comes about as a result of disappointing fundraising figures and that various attacks on Romney haven't particularly withering. He could self-fund but really he was just a bit late to the fight to really get going.
A la Vince Vaughn from the Wedding Crashers, it's primary season! With the Iowa caucus earlier this month acting as the curtain raiser to the primary season proper, New Hampshire is the first stop for the tour bus. Pressing the flesh and gaining delegates is the aim of the game here and the next couple of months will make or destroy the candidates. Some are on their last run... aren't they Ron?
Willard was always expected to do well here - he is a wealthy man in a wealthy state - and he delivered, showing he can connect with the 'first in the nation' state by winning 39.3% of the vote and bagging 97, 591 ballots. The evergreen libertarian Ron Paul came second with 22.9% whilst fellow Mormon Jon Huntsman came third with 16.9% with Iowa surprise Rick Santorum flagging in fourth; reinforcing the notion of his pigeon-holed candidacy.

Huntsman has come with a lot of hype and his team will take, but not be satisfied with, this third placed finish. Like Romney, the crux of his candidacy is on economic reforms and, if he is to be taken seriously, he should have done better here. Although Huntsman's rhetoric seems far more palatable to the crucial centre ground than Willard's.

Santorum's result probably goes to show he's nothing more than a 'flash in the pan' runner whilst this all but spells the end for Gingrich. With the disarray surrounding his campaign, the poor performance here does nothing but compound the reality for the former Speaker that his mainstream political career is effectively over. Ciao!
The infamous clip from a Romney speech, where he uttered that oh-so vote-winning sound bite: "I like being able to fire people", has been remixed by, it seems, the Democratic National Committee into a rather humorous 27-second viral video. Check it out home boyz...
That's right, the good people of Iowa have declared that the current state of the GOP nomination race is a dead heat. The 'next-in-line' - Willard Mitt Romney - found himself locked with surprise guy Rick Santorum who actually won by 34 votes but, for all intents and purposes, it was a tie. This is perhaps the first demonstration that Romney can connect with grassroots Republicans given Iowa's strong agricultural background but also shows he still has a ways to go before he can lock-up this race. Being a multi-millionaire is a state of mind, not that of your bank balance...

The biggest loser was Rick Perry who failed to capitalise on his own Texan cotton-farming background to woo Iowans, whose cornerstone issue is that of ethanol production subsidies, something uncomfortable for supply-side reforming Republicans. All in all, a good day for Mitt, a bad day for Rick. Perry will soon be a goner...
Last time around our lad Willard (that's Mitt Romney to the uninformed) finished a rather distant second to Mike Huckabee, short by nearly 10%. The 'next-in-line' candidate went on to finish third in the overall nominee race with John 'call me Maverick' McCain taking on Obama and selling his soul down the river in the process. Needs must...

This time around the former Governor of Massachusetts will be hoping for a better result after having four years to stew over the disappointment of not having a crack at this young, hipster Senator bloke. Called Barry... or something.

He'll be up against Josh Brolin lookalike Rick Perry (wait... I think that was a compliment), the rising niche conservative candidate Rick Santorum, the evergreen Ron Paul and the history teaching Newt Gingrich.

What the caucus will tell us is if Willard can connect with the salt-of-the-earth Republicans and give a needed credible grassroots impetus to his campaign. I mean... who doesn't relate to a multi-millionaire Mormon, who organised a winter Olympic games and governed one of the federation's richest states?
In an interview on 'Fox and Friends' she described him as "somebody who is not part of the chaos that is Washington. As Romney looks to shore-up grassroots GOP support, before the Iowa caucuses in January, the endorsement by Haley may go some way to getting Tea Partiers on board. Essentially marketing himself to them as the lesser of two evils. Haley's endorsement was much sought after, not just because of her pull with Tea Partiers, but also that South Carolina has correctly picked the GOP nominee in each primary race since 1980. History tolls!

Former Speaker of the House and Representative for Georgia, Newt Gingrich, had some good news last Tuesday when a Quinnipiac national poll showed him at 26 percent; four points higher than second place Mitt Romney. However, the 68-year-old might just have quickly lost hold of his good numbers after his showing at the Republican debate that Tuesday evening. Oh brother…

The moral and pragmatic credibility of his stance on immigration is one that has attracted much attention. On Tuesday he said the following.

"I don’t see how the … party that says it's the party of the family is going to adopt an immigration policy which destroys families that have been here a quarter-century … and I'm prepared to take the heat for saying, let's be humane in enforcing the law without giving them citizenship but by finding a way to create legality so that they are not separated from their families."

This newslog will be honest. It’s a ruddy good point. The kind of immigrants Newt is talking about are people well embedded in American society and it seems a colossal waste of money to track them down and kick them out. Surely that money can be better spent on improving current border security. Just sayin’…

However, for many in the GOP grassroots immigration, and illegal immigrants in particular, is a hotbed issue. Gingrich needs to do well in Iowa if he wants to be a serious contender and Republican Iowans are about as conservative as they come with the vast majority classifying themselves as ‘very conservative’ according to pollsters. Gingrich’s performance in the Iowa caucuses will go someway to showing if he’s hit the right note with the grassroots and also if the grassroots’ feeling on the immigration issue are receptive to more moderate policy ideas.
Possible GOP vice-presidential candidate Marco Rubio has found himself coming under increased scrutiny of late. A PAC, named American Bridge, has released a web spot over a fortnight ago detailing how the Florida Senator has embellished his family story. Essentially, bad man Fidel drove my family out of Cuba and now I'm making it in big-time politics. After some digging by the Washington Post it has been exposed that the freshman Senator misrepresented just when his family departed Cuba. They joined what would become a well established community of Cuban exiles as a result of the Castro/Guevara revolution.
Whilst Rubio may have been caught padding out his life story for political capital, frankly, it's pretty common practice.
